The nurse is preparing to administer aminophylline. The medication is ordered at 27 mg/kg/day and will be given by mouth over 6 doses each day. The concentration of the medication is 105 mg/5 mL.
 
  How many mL will be administered for the client who weighs 45 lbs? Round the answer to the nearest tenth.

The nurse is preparing to administer medication to a school-age client who weighs 66 lbs. The provider prescribes Kantrex (kanamycin). The medication is prescribed as 15 mg/kg/day, IM in equally divided doses every 12 hours.

4.4 mL/dose

Global Rationale: mL/dose = 5 mL/105 mg x 27 mg/1 kg x 1 kg/2.2 lbs x 45 lbs/1 day x 1 day/6 doses. Multiply the numerators and then divide by the denominators. The nurse will administer 4.38 or 4.4 mL per dose.
