NCLB requires that states do the following:
(a) establish challenging content and performance standards for mathematics, reading/language arts, and science; (b) test all students in grades three through eight in math and reading/language arts, test students in grades nine through twelve in either math or reading/language arts, and test students in grades three through twelve in science; (c) certify that a certain percentage of students each year have achieved adequate yearly progress on an approved test, and that all students achieve proficiency by 2014; (d) issue a report to parents and the general public that describes how all groups of students performed on the state test; (e) create an accountability system that rewards schools that meet its adequate yearly progress (AYP) goals and punishes schools that do not.
