Answer to Question 1

Vygotsky believed that teachers should systematically guide cognitive development through the use of clear instruction in the use of concepts and various procedures.

Answer to Question 2

There are at least three reasons why students should acquire the skills of self-regulation. First, as they move from the elementary to the middle and high school grades, teachers expect them to become increasingly responsible for figuring out how to learn the material. Second, as they move through the grades they have to learn and are tested over increasingly large amounts of material. Third, once out of school they will have to cope with an information-rich and rapidly changing world.
