Answer to Question 1

At least 10 percent of Americans are foreign born. Immigrants tend to be relatively young, ambitious, and upwardly mobile. The United States has had a love-hate relationship with immigrants. The earnings of the 25 million immigrants who arrived since the mid-1970s have reached the average income of the native-born population within 15 years of arrival. The poverty rate of those who are in the country for 15 to 20 years is lower than that of people born in the United States. Large-scale immigration is not the exclusive province of the United States. World migration has increased dramatically during the past 30 years. From 1996 to 2011, the United States received 27 percent of the world's international migrants, yet Western Europe received 21 percent.
