Contingency theory suggests that what works for one organization may not work for another since situational characteristics (known as contingencies) exist. As a result, managers must be flexible in order to apply practices and techniques that are most appropriate to specific situations. For example, leaders whose style does not match the situation, will find themselves ineffective.
