The Hawthorne effect was discovered during the Hawthorne studies at the Western Electric plant when Mayo and Roethlisberger were studying the effects of physical working conditions on employee productivity. They concluded that the special attention paid to employees motivates them to put greater effort into their jobs. When a manager shows concern for employees, their motivation and productivity levels are likely to improve.
