Answer to Question 1

Although the problem presents a challenge for the director of admissions, it is a programmed decision since it has probably been addressed in past years. The decision-making process is illustrated in Figure
10.1 in the text and involves eight steps:
1 Identify the problem -The College has 2,500 applications for 400 spots.
2 Define the objectives -Based on experience, the college will need to accept 800 of the applicants, thus rejecting 1,700.
3 Make a predecision -The director can make the decisions alone or appoint an admissions committee.
4 Generate alternatives -Establish admission criteria re: the relative weight of grades, test scores, and extracurricular activities, as well as establishing policies regarding legacies and minority applicants.
5 Evaluate alternatives -If students are admitted based on test scores alone, will the athletic programs suffer? If legacies are treated the same as other applicants, will alumni stop supporting the college? Will diversity goals lead to claims of reverse discrimination?
6 Make a choice -Decide on the relative weights of grades, test scores, athletic achievements, and legacy and minority status.
7 Implement choice -Make the admission decisions and advise applicants.
8 Follow up -Monitor the number of students who accept the offers of admissions.

If this process results in too many or too few students in the freshman class, amend the admissions criteria for the next year.
