How a manager perceives his or her employees can dictate how effectively those employees will work. If a manager expresses high expectations of a subordinate, that subordinates performance will improve to meet these expectations. This phenomenon is known as the Pygmalion effect. Alternatively, the Golem effect occurs when low expectations lead to poor performance.
