Answer to Question 1

Managers must achieve an appropriate balance between differentiation and integration. A complex organization that is highly differentiated needs a high level of integration to coordinate its activities effectively. By contrast, when an organization has a relatively simple, clearly defined role structure, it normally needs to use only simple integrating mechanisms. Its managers may find that the hierarchy of authority provides all the control and coordination they need to achieve organizational goals.
