Based upon the efforts of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Title VII of the Civil Rights Act prohibits workplace discrimination based on sex, religion, race or color, or national origin. Since that time, there are also laws that have been made to further protect individuals from discrimination in the areas of age, physical and mental disabilities, gender, sexual orientation, hate crimes, pregnancy, and military service.
