A supervisor must be aware of the following barriers in creating effective communication. Language: lack of knowledge of how each of us modifies the language causes difficulties in communication. Listening habits: listening is making sense of what we hear and requires paying attention, interpreting, and remembering. Failure to do any of those means failure to get the message. Feedback: failing to get feedback means not knowing if someone received and understood the message. Perception: our attitudes, interests, past experiences, and expectations determine how we organize and interpret our surroundings. Role requirements: fulfilling role requirement often requires supervisors to selectively interpret events. Poor choice of information medium: face-to-face communication is greater than that received from a flier. Lack of honesty: avoiding confrontations or hurting other's feelings. Emotions: jubilation or depression hinders feelings. Emotions: jubilation or depression hinder effective communication.
