We need to define and understand the problem before we proceed to solve it.

What are the alternative solutions?
We rightly rely on experience, knowledge, and judgment to find solutions. But the same factors also create an envelope around us that may limit our ability to see beyond it. We do have to look for an alternative for solving a problem.

Does the answer satisfy the needs in context?
A solution might answer a specific problem quite effectively but fail in context. An untreated rope may be used to pull a car with another car, but it will not last long through a fire: it will burn.
