Answer to Question 1

In order to ensure that the sender does not overwhelm the receiver (causing transmission overload), flow control is required. Flow control, which is managed by LLC, restricts the amount of data a sender can send until the sender receives an acknowledgment from the receiver that the receiver is ready for data. In the previous example, if the receiver's buffer is filled, the receiver alerts the sender of this condition. The sender then halts transmission until given the go ahead by the receiver to continue. Two common flow control methods at the data link layer are stop-and-wait and sliding windows.
