Answer to Question 1

ICMP can report five types of errors: 1. destination unreachable; 2. source quench, which notifies a sending host that a datagram has been discarded due to congestion; 3 . time exceeded, which is sent when a datagram's time-to-live value has counted down to zero (without this value a lost datagram could circle the network endlessly); 4. parameter error, which is sent when a datagram's header has a problem; and 5. redirection, which is used by routers to inform a sending host that the sending host has directed a datagram to the wrong router.
