Why do programs make so many read/writes to the hard drive?

Answer to Question 1

There are a lot more background operations happening than most users are aware of. For example, Microsoft Word has a spell checking function running as you type. It also automatically saves your document at regular intervals. Each application will perform a variety of read/writes depending on their functionality.
