World War II and the period following were times of major change for health care, for nursing, and for women. WWII caused a shortage of nurses due to many women choosing war workers men's jobs due to increased pay and the challenge of the work. The entertainment industry, presidential elections, and natural disasters have not directly affected the development of professional nursing.

In 1952, the National League for Nursing declared that the purpose of baccalaureate education was to prepare nurse generalists and that master's education should be the basic preparation for advanced practice nursing.
