Answer to Question 1

D
White's (2000) description of behaviors consistent with pursuers of excellence versus perfectionists
listed the perfectionist behaviors as having to win to maintain high self-esteem, being devastated by
failure (not learning from failure), valuing themselves for what they do (not for who they are), hating
criticism (not welcoming criticism), getting depressed and giving up (not experiencing disappointment
but keeping on going), only being able to live with being number one (not pleased with knowing they
did their best) and remembering mistakes and dwelling on them (not correcting mistakes and learning
from them).

Dogs have been used in studies to detect various cancers in human subjects. They have been trained to sniff breath samples from humans that were collected by having them breathe into special tubes. These people included 55 lung cancer patients, 31 breast cancer patients, and 83 cancer-free patients. The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).
