Wars are fought for a mixture of motivations, some good and some bad. Most wars combine elements of both. We cannot discount the possibility that individual psychology and emotions influence why some people fight. Some people volunteer to participate in civil war for selfless motives, expecting little in return except the opportunity to participate in an effort to change their society. Some people volunteer simply because they feel that they need to or even must participate, even at great risk to themselves and even without the expectation of clear future benefits. Without joining up, such people feel they would not be true to themselves and their beliefs. Factors such ascultural grievances, ideology, or other interestsmay influence individual psychology.
