An ideal response will:
1, Describe how China has become the world's largest recipient of foreign direct investment, is one of the world's third-largest traders, and holds the world second-largest currency reserves.
2, Discuss how many of the technologies that are being traded globally can be used for both commercial and military applications, which means that as China becomes more powerful economically, it is likely to become more powerful militarily and politically as well.
3, Observe how China's industrial growth places strain on the global environment in terms of climate change and fossil fuel depletion.
4, Identify that globalization makes it impossible to isolate China and curb its growth without seriously damaging the American economy and competitiveness of U.S. firms abroad; how the United States relies on China in matters related to Iran and North Korea; and how the United States and China have locked heads over China's currency manipulation, which has exacerbated the U.S. trade deficit and Chinese surplus.

Answer to Question 2

An ideal response will:
1, Identify that the American public thinks the United States spends between 20 and 25 percent of the federal budget on foreign aid while the actual amount is less than 1 percent.
2, Discuss how the United States contributes the most foreign aid in absolute dollars of all the advanced industrial countries, but when foreign aid is measured relative to gross national income, America is the lowest of the group.
