Explain the origins of the right to remain silent, and refute the belief held by many Americans that many guilty people go free by exercising that right.

1, Identify the right to remain silent as stemming from the Fifth Amendment privilege against compelled self-incrimination, and note that it is listed in the Miranda warning.
2, Discuss techniques the police have developed to elicit information while still following the Miranda rules, and provide examples.
3, Describe why many suspects make incriminating statements despite having been given Miranda warnings.
