The smallest of the major world regions with a population of only a few million, and the most culturally isolated, was Oceania, which includes Australia and the islands of the Pacific.

In 1500, the largest empires were the Aztecs in Mexico, with about 25 million, and the Inca in the Andes, with about 12 million.
