Answer to Question 1

Answer: The data collected from a spelling inventory includes a student's use of: initial and final consonants, consonant clusters and blends (both initial and final), short and long vowels, and common endings. When interpreting the data, a student's correct use of individual spelling features or attempts at using a feature, phonetic spellings, and correct spellings should be considered when determining spelling stage and subsequent activities.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Readers develop in three predictable stages: pre-reader, beginning reader, and reader. Each of the above stages is comprised of three areas: concept of word (recognizing the correspondence between written and spoken words), concept of spelling (recognizing that words are composed of letters and that letters represent sounds), and concept of story (understanding common story elements).
