Answer: The ideal answer will include:
1. Size: Bands are small, defined as having no more than 100 members. States may be very large.
2. Leadership: In bands it is informal, part time, and has relatively few responsibilities. In states it is formally recognized, requires many specialized individuals, and includes a large number of responsibilities.
3. Social control: In bands it based on social pressure and conducted on a personal level. In states it is based on laws and the threat of punishment and is conducted impersonally.
