Why: helps students to listen more actively. How: demonstrate; stop during presentations to recall big ideas; use/model list format, outlines, and diagrams.

Introduce story, read story, discuss story, create graphic organizer (optional), student retelling; mark scoring guide. Can assess comprehension (child makes personal connections, inferences, evaluative statements); can assess effectiveness of retelling (expression, coherence, need for prompts, use of vocabulary and sentence structures from the story).
