Although a delay in deterioration and accommodation to dysfunction may not seem as positive as improvement in function and ability to perform ADLs, they are nonetheless appropriate goals for a rehabilitative and restorative program. Part of preventing deterioration may include recognizing and addressing depression, ensuring exercise to maintain joint mobility, and preventing pressure ulcers. The LPN can assist a patient with accommodating to a dysfunction by helping the patient practice walking when he or she has a foot problem and helping the patient use assistive devices such as crutches under the instructions of a physician or physical therapist.

Promoting activity and self-care assists an older adult with PD to maintain functional ability. Response A, development of the shuffling gait, is often the most characteristic sign of PD. Safety promotion versus avoiding the shuffling gait is probably a more realistic goal. Responses B and D, promoting continence and taking medications, are usual activities to promote health for older adults with PD.
