Answer to Question 1

B
Although aging is a universal experience, each individual older person represents a different pattern of aging. Response A is not a good answer because it implies that the aging experience of every older person is the same. Responses C and D do not address normal aging. Older adults may experience depression and chronic diseases, but these are not normal aging experiences.

Answer to Question 2

B
Vitamin K functions in blood clotting and in regulating blood calcium and bone development. A deficiency of vitamin K can result in hemorrhaging, a sign of which is very dark and bloody stools. This is most likely to occur in an older person who is taking antibiotics, which destroy the normal intestinal bacteria responsible for extracting vitamin K from food. Lack of vitamin C, phosphorus, or iron in the diet can result in abnormal conditions in different body systems, but vitamin K is most directly linked to blood clotting.

Dogs have been used in studies to detect various cancers in human subjects. They have been trained to sniff breath samples from humans that were collected by having them breathe into special tubes. These people included 55 lung cancer patients, 31 breast cancer patients, and 83 cancer-free patients. The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).

People with alcoholism are at a much greater risk of malnutrition than are other people and usually exhibit low levels of most vitamins (especially folic acid). This is because alcohol often takes the place of 50% of their daily intake of calories, with little nutritional value contained in it.
