Speaking of poetry in general rather than poetry written specifically for young adults, Charters (1997) maintained that contemporary poetry:
 
  a. does not usually appeal to young adult readers since they prefer realistic fiction and historical fiction.
  b. lends itself to easy generalization due to the small number of writers who subscribe to similar philosophical beliefs.
  c. pleases nearly everyone, from the most traditional to the most avant-garde.
  d. should not be a part of the integrated curriculum because of its vague or hard to understand nature.

As with other forms of literature, to use poetry, drama, and short stories successfully with adolescents, educators must:
 
  a. select poetry, drama, and short stories that students, parents, and community members will find least objectionable, thus reducing the likelihood of censorship.
  b. select poetry, drama, and short stories written mainly for adults since writers have not focused attention to these genres of literature.
  c. select poetry, drama, and short stories that can be used singularly since these genres do not have a place in the integrated middle and/or secondary curriculum.
  d. identify poetry, drama, and short stories that appeal to young adult readers and that young adults want to read.
