Answer to Question 1

Etics are research results that hold true across cultures; emics are research results pertaining to a single culture. It is important to differentiate between them because we need to pay attention to the fact that behaviors in different societies may have very different causes and explanations.

Answer to Question 2

Nonsampling error refers to the omission of participants from research in such a way that the sample used in the research is nonrepresentative of the population. It occurs when sampling systematically neglects some component of the population. This error can occur because it may be easier to study some segment of the population (e.g., hospitalized schizophrenics) than others (e.g., homeless, noninstitutionalize d schizophrenics). The results of such research may not generalize beyond the subgroup studied. In fact, we may not even know that some subgroups are left out.
