Answer to Question 1

Europeans were interested mainly in the high islands because of their relative resource wealth. They sought sandalwood, oyster shells, whales, and local people to indenture as whaling crews and as manual laborers.
The intruders introduced sexually transmitted and other infectious diseases, alcohol, opium, forced labor, and firearms, which worsened the bloodshed in local wars.

Answer to Question 2

 Source of food and drink
