Answer to Question 1

Between the World War I years of 1915-1918, a period of great political instability in the crumbling Ottoman Empire, Muslim Ottoman Turks massacred an estimated 1 million or more Christian Armenians. Most of the Armenians perished when they were uprooted from their homes and forced into death marches to concentration camps in the Syrian Desert. This Armenian Genocide grew out of Turkish fears that Russia would militarily aid the Ottoman Armenians to regain their ancient Anatolian homeland. Turkey, has never accepted responsibility for its role in the killings and officially denies the genocide took place.
