Answer to Question 1

False

Answer to Question 2

The mud sediment consists of solid particles and pore spaces, the voids between particles. These deposits are subjected to compaction from their own weight and the weight of any additional sediment deposited on top of them, thereby greatly reducing the amount of pore space and the volume of the deposit. Compaction alone is sufficient for lithification of mud.
