Volcanic emissions played an important role in the origin and evolution of the atmosphere and hydrosphere. The continents are composed in part of volcanic and plutonic rocks, and oceanic crust is produced igneous activity. In addition, weathering of lava flows, pyroclastic materials and volcanic mudflows converts them to productive soils.
