Answer to Question 1

ANSWER: True

Answer to Question 2

ANSWER: Here is a sample response:
Ive always wanted to live in San Francisco, but the danger of earthquakes is very high. Even though the damage due to earthquakes is low, a quake in the city would be very dangerous. I will pick Sacramento, where the danger of a catastrophic earthquake is lower, but still be close enough to visit the city often.

I would live in Phoenix, since my fathers family is from there. Drought and heat will be my biggest concerns. I should make sure that I have a way of storing water for drinking in a long drought, and maybe choose a house that is designed to be cool without always using the air conditioner. I should definitely learn about any other steps I should take to avoid problems.

A successful answer must:
- connect a city with a hazard reasonable for the area.
- present at least one clear way of mitigating the effect of the disaster, and
- demonstrate that the student is proposing a reasonable balance between positive factors and the type and scope of disaster.

There can actually be a 25-hour time difference between certain locations in the world. The International Date Line passes between the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. It is not a straight line, but "zig-zags" around various island chains. Therefore, Samoa and nearby islands have one date, while American Samoa and nearby islands are one day behind. Daylight saving time is used in some islands, but not in others—further shifting the hours out of sync with natural time.
