 He erroneously assumes that writing five-paragraph themes will be adequate preparation for writing a ten-page research paper the following semester.
 Although most seventh graders may be capable of writing ten-page research papers, they are likely to need considerable scaffolding in doing soscaffolding that Mr. Van Holten doesn't provide.
 He fails to identify in his own mind what the objectives of the research paper assignment are. Had he thought about his objectives ahead of time, he might have realized that he needed to provide instruction related to topics such as plagiarism and referencing techniques.
 He gives his students a single long-term goal: to write a lengthy paper that is due three or four months in the future. Many seventh graders are likely to be more productive when they are working toward smaller short-term goals. For example, Mr. Van Holten might specify separate due dates for each of the following goals: (1) to complete the library research, (2) to organize the acquired information into subtopics, (3) to develop an outline for the paper, (4) to complete a first draft, (5) to proofreading the first draft for errors in content and mechanics, and
