There are numerous possibilities here. Elementary school teachers can telephone or visit each of the parents during the first two or three weeks of school to introduce themselves, or they can schedule parent-teacher conferences early in the school year to discuss what the parents would like their children to accomplish during the year. At a minimum, Mr. King should have established a good working relationship with these parents prior to the conference. Following are additional strategies:
 Begin by talking about some of Anne's positive traits.
 Communicate that helping Anne succeed both academically and socially is his highest priority.
 Ask for information that might help him better understand Anne and her unique needs as a student in his class.
 Express a desire to support Anne's parents in their efforts, noting that raising a child is never easy.
