Any human disturbance of a slope can hasten mass movement. Examples include creating highway road cuts, surface mining, and development of structures. When humans move large amounts of sediment, soil, and rock, such as with strip mining, this is called scarification. Another dramatic example is mountaintop removal.

Landslides, the sudden rapid movement of an unsaturated cohesive mass of regolith or bedrock is an example of a slide, as is slump. The preponderance of water in the moving materials, such as mudflows and earthflows, are examples of flows. Finally, soil creep, the slow gradual movement of soil particles downslope, is an example of creep.
