Describe what produces the retrograde motion of Mars. What geometric arrangements did Ptolemy use to explain this motion?

The retrograde motion of Mars is due to Earth having a faster orbital speed than Mars. From the point of view of a stationary Earth, Mars appears to move backward, or retrograde. Ptolemy described this motion geometrically by proposing that the planets orbited on small circles (epicycles) revolving on large circles (deferents).
