Answer to Question 1

Sedimentary cores show patterns of magnetized rock thanks to the natural compass properties of magnetite. The cores from either side of the ocean ridge have patterns that match both in strata thickness and in paleomagnetism.

Answer to Question 2

The oldest seafloor sediments recovered are 180 million years old. This is much much younger than the oldest continental rock, which exceeds 4 billion years in age.
