Answer to Question 1

Once a stream is close to base level, it essentially ceases to incise. At this point it now erodes its banks more than its bed. As this occurs, the river is widening its channel and begins to form meander loops as it exerts its energy from side to side rather than downward. Over time, the continued lateral erosion and migration of meanders creates a flat valley floor that floods with seasonal high water; thus, it is a floodplain.
