Answer to Question 1

Answer: C

Answer to Question 2

The United States sees a rising power in China, and the competition between China and Taiwan
who has long invested in Oceania, in part to receive support for their own geopolitical standing
in the international community. Recently, China has extended its influence into the region, in
part to capitalize on the presence of natural resources and also to counter-balance the influence
of Taiwan. Both Australia and New Zealand have acted as dominant outside political players in
the region, and it is unclear as to how these countries will respond to China's recent interest.
The U.S. policy is more than economic (with the TPP) and clearly has a geopolitical dimension
toward constraining China and reassuring allies of American engagement.
