Answer to Question 1

If these countries balance the need for global access with the needs for national autonomy, then the path may be appropriate. Malaysia, for example, has already embarked on such a course, and has declined advice of the International Monetary Fund that the government believed would be harmful. Their alternative path of limiting international investment seems to have worked well. ASEAN, also, have provided a strong framework for pursuing more balanced policies. The ultimate goal should be for the countries of Southeast Asia to be able to make their own decisions, and to exercise greater control over their own destinies, rather than be controlled by external bodies.
