Answer to Question 1

In all four countries, the state has assumed a major role in guiding their respective economies. Likewise, these countries have all undergone similar transitions, from the export of inexpensive consumer goods, through the development of heavy industry, to the export of high-tech products. A major difference is that whereas all are capitalist-oriented, China retains a communist-inspired political system. Economic growth has been more unevenly distributed within China than it has been in the other countries.
