In general, the western portion of the region is dominated by Islam, whereas the eastern regions, as well as the Tibetan Plateau, are dominated by Buddhism. Religion remains a potentially divisive feature because some groups have favored a particularly radical interpretation (i.e., the Taliban in Afghanistan) while some governments, including China, have attempted to suppress some religious freedoms.
