Why does Central Asia have such large lakes, and why are many of these lakes so severely threatened?

Answer to Question 1

The region has numerous large lakes because of the geomorphology of the region: much of the region is composed of basins surrounded by mountainous areas. The lakes are threatened because of uneven precipitation and increased irrigation, leading to a shallowing of the lakes and a corresponding increased salinization.

Answers should mention initial settlements, China's influence in terms of language and religion.
