global stage. He has readily used repressive force to bring dissidents in line. In particular, Putin
has consolidated political power, increased the authority of the central government, limited press
freedoms, and silenced critics who disagreed with his policies. Russian authorities have also
increased the level of surveillance and monitoring throughout the country.
