To compare the scale of Europe to that of North America, draw a circle 500 miles (800 kilometers) around Frankfurt, Germany. Then do the same for Chicago. This distance is about a day's journey by car from each of the two cities.

Within 500 miles of Frankfurt, there are 16 different countries. A 500-mile drive from Chicago will just barely include Canada; otherwise, the entire radius is located with the territorial boundaries of the United States. Consequently, the social geographies exhibited in Europeincluding linguistic and religious diversityis tremendous.
