Answer to Question 1

This is difficult because many species go extinct every year without us ever knowing they existed. Furthermore, extrapolating from small scales to large scales can introduce inaccuracies, and estimating species loss from extinction rate and number of species is inaccurate because neither extinction rate nor the number of species is well constrained.

A catalyst is a molecule (or substance) that speeds up a reaction without itself being consumed.
