Answer to Question 1

Answer: B

Answer to Question 2

Answer: The first major U.S. initiative to clean up the nation's air was the 1970 Clean Air Act. This act charged the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with creating and enforcing air quality standards for certain classes of pollutants. Individual states have the task of ensuring compliance, at the risk of losing a portion of federal funding for noncompliance. Regions where air quality falls short of the standards are designated nonattainment areas. Significant expansion of the EPA's role in air pollution was authorized in 1977 and 1990.
