Gilligan primarily criticizes Kohlberg's work on the grounds that he failed to adequately consider possible differences in thinking between men and women. Some research thinks that woman have a more caring orientation toward people, and this morality of care is classified as a lower stage of development in Kohlberg's theory than it should be.
