You're a math teacher, and you typically have students solve a number of word problems on your quizzes. However, you know that the standardized test your students will soon be taking will be in a multiple-choice format. In addition to ensuring to the extent possible that your students understand the content that will be assessed on the standardized test, describe what you should do to best prepare your students to succeed using this format?

You have a student who is being disruptive and you ask him to move to the back of the room and away from the rest of your students. He refuses to leave. First, describe how you should react, and second describe what you should say to the student. Third, describe what you should do if the student remains defiant.

Answer to Question 1

To ensure to the extent possible that your students are able to perform successfully with a multiple-choice format, you should provide them with practice using the format. For instance, you can give them problems to solve as you always do on your quizzes and tests and then give them four answer choices, one of which is correct, and the distractors being answers that reflect the most common errors students make.

Answer to Question 2

You should first remain calm and avoid becoming angry. Second, you should firmly, but not threateningly, tell the student to step outside so you can talk to him or her. Finally, if the student refuses to step outside, you should immediately send another student for help, or call security if your school has a process for doing so.
